Le Magnifique Collection Releasing Black Friday 7am PST

A new Vaughn de Heart collection called "Le Magnifique" will be released on November 26 Black Friday at 7am PST (The pieces in the collection are all black, and it is releasing on Black Friday, and it is releasing at 7am because there are 7 pieces, just in case you missed how those tie in). The Le Magnifique  collection of 7 items of which there are only 7 made.  "Le Magnifique" is french for "The Magnificent"  and the nickname for this collection is "The Magnificent 7" because there are 7 items and only 7 of each made. There are 49 pieces in total.  There is a tank, a crew neck t shirt, a henley, a thermal, a pull over hoodie, a zip hoodie, and a cardigan.

Here's the skinny (never have I in my life used that phrase) on the collection.  It actually started with the zip hoodie.  I put Le Magnifique on the back and I thought I was done.  Then while I was sitting at work one day crunching numbers (I work during the day as an analyst) the idea of the magnificent 7 came to me.  I thought,  "I'll make 7 hoodies!"  But that didn't seem like enough.  When I got home I got to my computer and started designing more and the idea of 7 items and making only 7 of each happened.  Then the idea of the numbered cards to give it a special feeling.  Then the idea of the gold tags, and the special drawstring bags as packaging.  I actually started making this collection in August (That's why there is a tank in the collection), that's how long it took all of the details to come together, and now that it is made and my screen printer thoroughly hates me for putting him through this ordeal, the collection is finished.
Once they sell out I will not make any more.  The collection consists of all black garments.  Each item comes inside of a special Le Magnifique black drawstring bag.  This bag cannot be purchased, it can only be acquired by buying a piece in the collection.  Also each item will come with a Le Magnifique card.  On the front of the card will be a handwritten number in gold giving the sequential order of the peice.  For example the first person to order a particular piece will receive the "1 of 7" card, the next person will receive the "2 of 7" card and so forth. On the back of the card is a quote explaining the collection.  Also featured in this collection are gold tagless labels instead of the traditional silver tagless labels.  And the two hoodies feature a sewn in tag.  One portion of the tag reads, "Limité à sept piéces".  Which is french for "Limited to 7 pieces."

I created this collection because I wanted to make something different and even harder to get than the other Vaughn de Heart pieces so far.  I wanted to exercise even more details in my product and to make something even more unique and special.  The only place the collection says Vaughn de Heart is on the tag.  Also the Vaughn de Heart logo is not on any of the garments. 

The inspiration for the collection came from the question of,  "What constitutes magnificence?"  What makes something great?  Is it the design?  Is it the quality?  Is it what is associated with it?  All of these are necessary, but alone are insufficient.  What I believe constitutes true magnificence is how few there are.  What few deserve the title and how hard they are to find.  For without rarity, all the others are blown away by winds of reoccurrence.  That is Le Magnifique.

I wanted this collection to stand on its own.  I hope you will enjoy the magnificent 7.

Vaughn de Heart Collection Le Magnifique Sneek Peak

If you have been following me on Facebook or Twitter or read my latest newspaper interview you have probably heard me talk about the "Le Magnifique" collection.  There are 7 items in the collection and there are only 7 made of each.  Each item features Gold tags instead of the traditional silver tags.  Some items have gold sewn in tags as well.  Each item comes in a Le Magnifique drawstring bag.  And every item comes with a card signifying it's order, "1 of 7" "2 of 7" etc.  The first person to buy will receive the, "1 of 7" card and so forth.  More details coming soon.

A song about lions heart and courage?  Are you serious?  Is this the Vaughn de Heart themesong?  This has quickly become my favorite song as of late, and I bought the album last friday and listened to it twice through today.  The topics of their music I can really connect with, combine that with that great guitar and banjo mixed in with a little bit of a London accent and you have brilliant music!

As I was watching Kanye West's New video "Power"-a modern, graphical nod to Greek and Roman Mythology...I noticed a long silver sword dangling precariously over his head...After a little research, it was revealed to me that this sword is the Sword of Damocles... As that classic tale goes. Damocles was the courtier to a tyrannical king. Day after day, Damocles showered the king with praise and spoke with envy of the power which he wielded. After hearing these incessant songs of praise from his courtier, the king saw that many did not understand the dangers of absolute power. So he suggested that Damocles switch places with him...A befuddled and shocked Damocles hastily agreed to the switch....The newly crowned king sent the swiftest messengers to inform his friends and family about his "kingship" for a day...His friends were invited to the finest feast...The opulence of the surroundings and the decadence of the fare stunned many. Damocles arrived to the scene fashionably late...After taking his seat on the gilded throne overlooking the court...He began to take in the elegant surroundings...His gaze began to drift up...until he saw something shocking...Directly over his head was a razor sharp steel blade...forged in the royal fires...And this blade was hanging by a single strand of horse hair...Damocles threw a glance of terror towards the king...who reminded him that he agreed to stay on the throne for a full day...Damocles eased back into the throne, but could not assuage his fear...He lept off the throne and quickly exited the room...his face red with shame...his pride lay battered and bloodied on the marble floors of the throne room...The moral of this story? Renaldo "Razor" Gairy

Renaldo Gairy is the 2007 WBFF World Champion, and the 2007 FAME National Champion and more.  You can read his full list of awards here.  He is also my cousin.  His mom and my mom are sisters and it is crazy for me to look at what he has become.  Renaldo, or Ren as I've always called him (I didn't know his name was Renaldo until a couple of years ago when I googled him) and his brother Wayne grew up in Toronto under my aunt and uncles roof.  My brother and I grew up in Michigan so they were always within a days drive.  We would drive or take the train to visit during the American Thanksgiving holiday.

 

I always looked forward to going up to their house to have some roti, patties, and my favorite bun and cheese (We are of Jamaican decent).  Ren and Wayne always had the best supply of imported video games, and movies.  I always got an education when I went.  Also Ren could always draw and his room always had posters of his crazy lifelike sketches.

They also had weights down in their basement which I never really payed much attention to when we were kids and when I was in high school.  I remember when I came to visit when I was in college and I was met by tall gold trophies next to their staircase.  He showed me scribbled notebooks filled with dozens of different diets that he used before competitions, showed me some of the techniques that his posing coach had taught him, and told of the many days that he would go without drinking water before a show.  He also never eats processed sugar...except to reward himself for a competition.  When I started my brand I remember thinking back and looking at all he had accomplished and the extreme dedication in chasing his dream and thinking, "If Ren can do it, so can I."  It is extremely inspiring to have someone else chasing their dream, and even more so when they are within your own family.   Ren is a champion body builder, and causing quite a stir.  You can tell from his video above that not only does he take extreme care of his body, but he is a bit of a showman as well.  He goes beyond the realm of traditional body building by using dance moves and poses to set him apart from the competition and also make his routines more entertaining for the crowd.  He is also a trainer and has trained other champions.  However when I saw him after he had entered the circuit he was exactly same as he has always been, and that is the most impressive thing to me about him.  The "Razor" is very much still just my same old import loving, cartoon sketching, McDonald's hotcake eating cousin Ren.

Boutique Pricing Methods

This is an article I wrote to guide others interested in selling their product in boutiques and shops.  I go fairly in depth and it contains a lot of information I could not find online.

What you should know before you approach a boutique/shop

Being in a room with two buyers can be a very tense situation.  Throw
on top of that inexperience and you are quickly driving down the road
of wrong decisions with signs of regret along the way.  I felt like an
amateur with terms like Consignment and Keystoning, but eventually I
learned how pricing worked in a boutique, the hard way.  So I decided
to write this article to help you become more prepared with the basics
before you approach a shop.  My name is RoyLyn Palmer-Coleman and I
have been running a brand called Vaughn de Heart out of California for
a little over a year now.  You can find us at www.vaughndeheart.com

Should I put my clothing in stores?

Before you approach the shop

1.  Become a regular-Before you approach the shop with your product.
If possible, visit the shop a few times.  Talk to the employees about
the shop, or just fashion in general.  Show them that you are not just
an average consumer.  Make them comfortable with you and when you
finally do approach them with your business proposal they may be more
willing to sell your product and may even give you insights on what
the buyers for the store are looking for and what they like.

2.  Buy from the shop-One of the greatest satisfactions and signs of
support is money.  Imagine if a designer wanted to collaborate with
your brand but before he did he bought 3 of your shirts.  How much
better would you feel about him when he finally approaches you and
says he wants to work with you?  It goes a long way toward building
credibility.  If you support them, chances are, they will be more
willing to support you.

Pricing in a boutique

1. Consignment-This is when a store will carry your product and take a
percentage of each sale.  For example a store might agree to take 30%
of each sale.  So if you choose to sell your shirts for $10 they will
take $3 from the sale and you will get $7.  Most of the time under
this method I have found that you will determine the price in their
shop.

2. Wholesale-Wholesale is when a shop will buy your product from you
and then sell it in their shop.  The advantage to this method is that
you get your money for your product regardless of how many items they
actually sell in their shop.

3. Keystoning-Keystoning is a type of pricing method that is a
standard in the industry.  How Keystoning works is you determine a
wholesale price to sell your product to the store for.  They will
double that and make it the selling price.  For
example if you want your shirt to sell for $20 dollars in a particular
shop, that means you have to sell your shirt to the shop for $10.
Keystoning seems to be the standard wholesale method that I have run
into with most shops.  So if you go into a boutique, chances are they
have bought most of the product in that shop for half of the original
selling price.  If you are a new brand and your strategy is to make
your shirts cheaper than most and still make a profit, you need to be
able to make your shirts for less than half of the selling price.
This method was all new to me.  I thought I would just sell my shirts
to the shop at whatever price I could negotiate then they would turn
around and sell it for whatever price they wanted (similar to
wholesale).  But with Keystoning the two are related and gives the
shop more power in the bargaining process.

4.  Keystone Plus-In this pricing method the final selling price is more than
double the price the boutique buys the shirt.  For example, you sell a shirt
to a store for $5, the store could turn around and sell it for $16.
This would be called Keystone plus 3, because the final selling price was
determined as if the store bought the shirt for three more dollars than it actually did.
The regular Keystoning method would have priced the shirt at $10.
The advantage here goes to the shop because they make more profit, which
of they like.  So when explaining to the shop what you want the shirt to sell for
you would tell them Keystone plus 3.


Marketing through a boutique

1.  Pop up shop- Team up with the store that is carrying your product
and have them feature it in store for a limited period of time.  You
can have giveaways and special displays to bring people out.

2. Behind the counter goodies- You can create a flyer or some other
promotional giveaway and ask the store if they would put one in the
bag of whoever buys something from their shop, not just people who by
your brand, creating exposure.

Keep Adapting

1. You are not trapped.  Just because your product is in stores does
not mean that you have to be carried by stores forever.  You can
change your mind later or even choose a timeline to pull your product
from stores.

2. There is more than one way to start a brand-There have been some
who have chosen to be the only ones to carry their product, some who
allow their product to be carried by others, or both.  All of these
methods are respectable and I feel that is not being said enough. It
is important to understand your customer to determine witch method is
best for you.  Sometimes exclusivity will drive your customer directly
to you, sometimes exposure, it truly depends on what you are selling
and what stage you are in during your development.

The American Office....

After spending a substantial amount of time in Washington DC, I believe I have fully grasped where exactly America has lost it's way....OFFICE ATTIRE...It wasn't always this way...In the 20's and 30's the red and white blue were some of the most fashionable people in the planet...Now we see ourselves drowning in an oil-filled ocean of pleated pants and short sleeve dress shirts. Your pens belong in your pocket or on your desk not on the front of your shirt. Pleated pants are an abomination and I am drafting legislation that will make those who purchase and wear them subject to heavy fines and possibly....jail time. Dressing for the office needn't break the bank. Just get a suit that fits. A simple grey cotton suit accented by a red skinny tie. Minimalism is IN especially at work. Leaving the nauseating patterned ties in the dark deep recesses of the closet...or you'll end up looking like these two.

Missing!

This weekend I went by one of the shops that is carrying Vaughn de Heart by the name of Trucker in downtown Chico, CA to take some photos of the recent designs that I delivered to their shop (These photos are old ones).  When I got there I went up to the usual rack where they keep the VDH and I didn't see any.  So I went up and down the racks searching for any VDH.  I didn't find anything, it finally hit me that all of the shirts had sold out.

I don't know what has changed, maybe it was the newspaper article that helped, but I'm grateful.  Apparently there are people out there who do not know me, but like my product enough to buy it which is a huge confidene booster.  And I hope that one day I will eventually be able to meet these people.

Mark Ronson-Circuit Breaker

One of my favorite songs, it has that 80's video game quality sound to it.  It was produced by Mark Ronson a British Grammy winning guitarist and producer.  He is also widely known and recognized as a very fashion forward individual.  Even Teaming up with Gucci to release a shoe in 2009.  The video that was a created for this song is an ode to Zelda which is one of my favoe video game franchises.  I remember running to store after store on the chilly Michigan mornings trying to get a copy of Ocarina of Time.  One of my favorite gams of all time.  Nice touch Mark!

I say this a year ago and it has recently come back to my attention.  I had no idea that Will Smith the Fresh Prince of Bel Air was this inspiring. 

Lemonade Stand

A couple Fridays ago when I was coming back to Paradise after interviewing with the Chico News and Review I ran across these fellas, Chandler and Cameron (From left to right).  These two brothers were running a Lemonade stand here in Paradise and because I always support new business ventures I had to get some cool refreshment from the heat.  They were aptly prepared with ice chilled lemonade and you even had a choice between yellow or pink.  They told me that that day before they made $40 dollars.  Which for them must have felt like a whole lot more.  Cars would come by and Chandler would call out to them and get their order, and Cameron would run up to the car with his hands full of sweet summer refreshment.  Watching them with their lemonade stand started me thinking on how easy it really is to start a business.  They did it very simply and easily.  Why is it that for so many of us older and "wiser" people it is so hard.  I wrestled for years before I finally had the courage to do it.  What I wish is that I was more like them.

Since I was coming back from the interview I had some freebies on hand that I gave the young entrepreneurs.  Cameron's brother Chandler took the other two buttons that didn't have hearts on them.  Cameron dissapointedly said, "What am I going to do with these buttons with hearts on them."  I replied, "Find a girl you like and give them to her."  Immediately a devious grin came over him and I could see his wheels turning, I know he had one, or possibly many in mind.

For a dollar a cup these boys were providing much more than lemonade.  I am really interested to know what they will be up to in the future.  They already have one key ingredient to success and that is the ability to venture.  And that simple quality is one that I feel many people never acquire.  Good luck lads, I see a bright future.

Vaughn de Heart Interview by Trucker Deluxe

The good folks over at Trucker Deluxe interview me and they posted it on their blog.  Trucker is a store in Chico, California that is carrying Vaughn de Heart.  In fact they were the first store to ever carry my brand.  I remember the day that I nervously met with the owner to show him my products out of my white Analog messenger bag on that rainy Friday in February.  When he said yes I could hardly contain myself when I was in his office.  When I got back to my car I screamed until my voice got horse and texted and called everyone who cared about the brand.  That was a big day.  You can read the interview here
